Greig O'Connor
The Tri-City Voice Athlete of the Month is a three-sport star who was named Newark Memorial High School's Athlete of the Year: graduating senior Greig O' Connor. O'Connor has excelled as a member of Newark's football team (an all-MVAL player on both the offensive and defensive lines), a wrestler (O'Connor qualified for the CIF state tournament in the 285-pound division), and in track and field (qualifying for the CIF state tourney in the discus competition).
Recently O'Connor told us a little bit about himself.
TCV: Between wrestling, discus and football, what's your favorite sport of the three?
O'Connor: Football.
TCV: What's your favorite memory of high school sports?
O'Connor: There's not really one memory that stands out. In football, it was being around my teammates. In wrestling, my friend and teammate David gave me this really long motivating speech before my qualifying match for state. He told me he was by my side and I needed to toughen up, that he really believed in me.
TCV: Who are your major influences/role models?
O'Connor: My parents, of course, they've always been supportive of everything I do.
TCV: Who are your favorite athletes or teams?
O'Connor: I don't really have any.
TCV: Favorite food?
O'Connor: Spaghetti.
TCV: Favorite movie?
O'Connor: One I just saw - Transformers 2.
TCV: Favorite TV show?
O'Connor: I'm not a big fan of TV, I watch the news - whatever's on in the mornings.
TCV: What type of music do you listen to?
O'Connor: I don't really listen to hardcore stuff, but before I compete, I like to listen to Bob Marley, or J-Boog.
TCV: What was your favorite class in school?
O'Connor: Probably English.
TCV: What are your plans for next year and beyond as far as athletics and academics?
O'Connor: I'll be going to College of Menlo Park, and play football there, probably not wrestling and track. I want to go into business marketing.
